Kia has rebranded over the past few years, adding sporty and stylish models to its lineup. The popular Optima has also benefited from a rebrand. Now, it's being redesigned and released as the K5 for the 2021 model year.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The 2021 Kia K5 is a midsize sedan that seats five and comes with a number of sporty, sleek exterior elements. It is available in five trim levels, which are the LX, LXS, GT-Line, EX, and GT. Standard features on the LX trim include a bold silver front grille, solar-control glass, multi-reflector and automatic LED headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, and LED daytime running lights. In contrast, the LXS adds illuminated door handles and a smart trunk.
The GT-Line is one of the sportier models in the lineup, boasting specialized body styling, sporty black mirrors with LED turn signal indicators, LED fog lights, and 18-inch alloy wheels with Pirelli all-season tires. Every EX comes standard with its own set of 18-inch wheels, featuring a gray machine finish, and some of the features on the GT-Line. Lastly, the top-rated GT model has a quad-tip dual exhaust system and 19-inch alloy wheels with premium tires.
Engine (Power)
The standard engine in the K5 is a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder powertrain that supplies 180 horsepower. It pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission and comes standard on the first four trims. But the GT model features a more powerful 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 290 horsepower. The engine is matched with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
Performance
With the base engine, acceleration is fairly speedy — going from zero to 60 mph in just eight seconds. However, if you want more impressive acceleration and power, opt for the GT model, which is designed with performance in mind. Also, handling is precise and reliable in all models, each offering smooth and seamless shifting. Front-wheel drive is standard across the board, although the LXS and GT-Line are available with all-wheel drive.
Interior
The cabin of the 2021 K5's base trim offers cloth upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, a six-speaker audio system with an 8-inch touch screen, and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay smartphone integration. The LXS tacks on keyless entry and remote ignition and a split-folding rear seat with a center armrest. At the same time, the mid-level GT Line has sporty interior flourishes, simulated leather and cloth upholstery, a power driver's seat, rear USB ports, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
Choose the EX to get luxurious upgrades like heated and ventilated front seats, simulated leather upholstery, rear air vents, and a wireless smartphone charging pad. Your GT's cabin will feature sport front seats.
Safety Features
All trim levels of the 2021 Kia K5 come with a rearview camera, lane-keep assist, driver attention warning, and forward collision mitigation. The upper four trims also include blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a unique rear passenger exit system that prevents those in the backseat from opening the door into a vehicle approaching from behind. You can also add adaptive cruise control, enhanced front and rear collision avoidance, and upgraded lane-keep assist.
