Although the compact SUV segment has a lot of options to choose from, one of the leaders is the redesigned 2021 Kia Sorento. This stylish model is one of the only choices that offers a third row along with a number of powertrain options and features.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The 2021 Kia Sorento is available in five trim levels, which are the LX, S, EX, SX, and SX-Prestige. From the outside, this crossover SUV showcases a longer body and an aggressive front end with sporty styling elements. Standard exterior equipment on the LX trim includes front and rear skid plates, heated side mirrors with integrated LED turn signal indicators, a rear spoiler, 17-inch alloy wheels, and automatic LED headlights. The S adds sporty styling elements, roof rails, and 18-inch wheels.
The mid-level EX comes with a smart power-operated tailgate, a panoramic sunroof with a power-operated sunshade, and LED fog lights. Opting for the SX brings a set of 20-inch glossy-black wheels, additional LED lighting with full LED headlights, and additional chrome elements. With the top SX-Prestige, you get a few styling enhancements.
Engine (Power)
The Sorento is available with four engine options. The first is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that comes standard, producing 182 pound-feet of torque and 191 horsepower. It pairs with a new eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the front wheels. Next up is a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that puts out 311 pound-feet of torque and 281 horsepower. This unit matches with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The other two powertrain options are hybrids that help keep fuel efficiency ratings up. The first is a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit paired with a 44-kW electric motor that produces a combined output of 227 horsepower. The second is a plug-in hybrid system featuring the same engine with a 66.9-kW electric motor that makes 261 horsepower and can go up to 30 miles on a full charge.
Performance
The 2021 Sorento handles well, inspiring confidence when you're behind the wheel. Although it's larger and longer than the outgoing model, the size increase helps to accommodate more passengers and gear comfortably in the cabin, and the SUV doesn't feel like a massive vehicle when you're driving.
Interior
Within the cabin of the Kia Sorento base trim level, you'll find cloth upholstery, manually adjustable front seats, and rear air vents. Standard tech includes a six-speaker audio system, an 8-inch touch screen, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, and five USB outlets. Stepping up to the S brings dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, faux leather upholstery, and a power driver's seat.
Choose the EX to get wireless charging and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. With the SX comes a power-adjustable front passenger's seat, second-row captain's chairs, a 10.25-inch touch screen, and navigation. Finally, the SX-Prestige boasts a 12-speaker premium Bose audio system, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a heated steering wheel, leather upholstery, and ventilated front seats.
Safety Features
All 2021 Kia Sorento models come with Kia Drive Wise driver-assist technology, which bundles automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, lane-following assist, rear occupant alert, driver attention warning, and high-beam assist. Options include upgraded automatic braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and avoidance and safe exist assist, and smart cruise control with stop-and-go.
