A four-door hatchback with enough seating for five travelers, the 2023 Kia Soul maintains its unconventional cube-shaped design but offers a few updates compared to the outgoing model. The most notable improvement involves the SUV's exterior, but the automaker swapped formerly optional driver-assistance features to now standard ones. Trim Levels (Exterior)
After removing the X-Line model, Kia now offers the 2023 Kia Soul in four trims: LX, S, GT-Line, and EX. For the 2023 model year, the automaker slightly tweaked the Soul's exterior, particularly its front bumper, headlights, taillights, and grille. It also has new designs for the 17- and 18-inch wheels. You can also choose fun two-tone colors: Clear White with a Fusion Black roof or Surf Blue with a Fusion Black roof.
Engine (Power)
Another change for the Soul's 2023 model year involves the removal of a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine, leaving the SUV with just one option. However, don't let that deter you, since the remaining engine produces ample power. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine cranks out 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque. A smooth and responsive intelligent variable transmission sends power to the front wheels. To provide you with a little boost when passing other vehicles, the transmission selects lower gear ratios.
Performance
When it comes to gas mileage, the 2023 Kia Soul achieves impressive numbers. With the LX, S, and GT-Line trims, expect to get an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. The EX trim gets slightly better mileage, at 29 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. Driving the Soul is an enjoyable experience since it's easy to maneuver, park in tight spaces, and navigate along curvy roads.
Interior
Thanks to a raised interior, the 2023 Kia Soul is easy to get in and out of and offers plenty of headroom for travelers in both rows. The SUV has one of the largest cargo spaces in its class, with a maximum of 62.1 cubic feet of space. To keep everyone connected while traveling, the Soul comes with a standard 8-inch or optional 10.2-inch touchscreen display paired with the latest infotainment system. Standard features include Bluetooth, a USB port, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, while available upgrades include navigation, wireless smartphone charging, satellite radio, and extra USB ports.
Safety Features
Another update to the 2023 Kia Soul is the inclusion of more standard driver-assistance features. This SUV now comes with forward automatic emergency braking, driver-attention monitoring, forward-collision warning, and lane-keep assist. These features join others that are part of the Drive Wise suite and include automatic high-beam headlights and a rear-seat alert. You can also add extra features such as cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. The SUV also has two complete sets of LATCH connectors located on the rear outboard seats along with a tether anchor located on the rear middle seat.
