Five places the Sorento comes out ahead, each measured the same way on both vehicles. Then there is a sixth thing
worth knowing, and it is the one that catches people off guard.
Price: the Sorento LX opened at $32,390 at launch. The Pilot line opens at $42,395. That is $10,005
just to walk in the door, and the gap holds all the way up both lines: $47,790 against $55,195.
Fuel: with all-wheel drive, the Sorento's 2.5L returns 25 combined to the Pilot's 21. Even the
turbocharged Sorento, the quick one, comes in ahead at 23 combined.
Warranty: 10 years and 100,000 miles of powertrain coverage against 5 years and 60,000 miles.
Double, in years and in miles. The basic warranty runs longer too, 5 years and 60,000 miles against 3 and 36,000.
Size, when size is the problem: 10.5 in shorter and 3.7 in narrower. Plenty of Butler County houses
came with a garage built for a smaller car, and plenty of streets around here were never drawn for a 78.5 in wide
SUV.
Power, at the top of the range, is a tie rather than a Kia win: the Sorento's available 2.5L
turbocharged makes 281 hp and 311 lb-ft. The Pilot's V6 makes 285 hp and 262 lb-ft. Four horsepower apart, with more
torque on the Kia. That is a wash, not a win for either badge, and it is worth saying out loud because the Sorento is
often assumed to give away power to the Pilot. Shop the top of both lines and it does not.
