2026 Kia Sportage vs Honda CR-V

The Sportage LX opens at $28,790 in front-wheel drive at launch, before destination. The CR-V LX opens at $30,920, about $2,130 more. This like-for-like matchup is the cleanest comparison on this page: same base trim, same drivetrain, same basis. With all-wheel drive, the same two trims run $30,590 and $32,420, about $1,830 apart.

At the top of each range, the Sportage X-Pro Prestige launched at $39,690 and the CR-V Sport Touring Hybrid all-wheel drive at $42,550. Those are not the same kind of vehicle, one gas and one hybrid, so read them as two data points rather than a head-to-head.

The price gap and the fuel gap pull against each other. The gap at the door is money you keep on day one. The fuel savings arrive slowly. Whether they ever catch up to the price gap depends on two numbers this page does not have: your annual miles, and how long you keep the vehicle.

On the gas engines, the CR-V returns 30 mpg combined with front-wheel drive and 29 with all-wheel drive. The Sportage returns 28 and 26. Highway figures tie at 33 mpg front-drive, so the CR-V builds its edge in town and widens it with all-wheel drive.

Among the hybrids, all-wheel drive runs the same way: 37 mpg combined for the CR-V Hybrid against 35 for the Sportage Hybrid. The front-drive hybrids split by where the miles happen. The Sportage is ahead on the highway, 44 mpg to 36, and the CR-V is ahead in the city, 43 to 41, which puts front-drive combined at 42 for the Sportage and 40 for the CR-V.

This is the Sportage's clearest advantage, and it is measured in years. Kia covers the powertrain for 10 years or 100,000 miles against Honda's 5 years or 60,000. The basic warranty runs 5 years or 60,000 miles against 3 years or 36,000, so the fourth and fifth years of Sportage ownership are covered where CR-V ownership is not. Kia adds 5 years or 60,000 miles of roadside assistance. On corrosion the term is 5 years on both, and Honda's runs to unlimited miles where Kia's caps at 100,000.

How much that is worth depends on you. Lease or trade every three years and most of the extra coverage is coverage you never reach. Keep a vehicle until it stops and it may be the most valuable line on this page.

Behind the rear seats these two are level: 39.6 cu ft for the Sportage with its dual-level floor set low, 39.3 for the gas CR-V. Three tenths of a cubic foot is nobody's deciding factor, and not a win for either. Fold the seats and the CR-V takes the maximum, 76.5 cu ft to 74.1, gas to gas. Both give up room in hybrid form, so cross-shop hybrid to hybrid.

The Sportage puts a 12.3-inch touchscreen in every trim against 9 inches in the CR-V, with no trim ladder to climb to get it. The CR-V answers on the phone side, bundling wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and a wireless charging pad into all of them, where the Sportage reserves charging for EX and above. The base-trim shopper gets the bigger screen from Kia and the tidier phone setup from Honda. Harman Kardon audio arrives on the Sportage SX and above; Bose on the CR-V Sport Touring.

Each maker states its rating differently, so here are both as stated. The Sportage is rated at 2,500 lbs with trailer brakes, and 1,653 lbs without them. The CR-V is rated at 1,500 lbs with the gas engine and 1,000 lbs as a hybrid, each as a single figure rather than a braked-and-unbraked pair.

Because each maker reports its rating on a different basis, this page does not put a number on the difference. If you tow, tell us what you plan to pull and we will check the specific rating for the trim you want.

These two park in the same spot and fit in the same garage. Length and width differ by less than half an inch, which is measurement noise rather than a difference. Two dimensions do move. The Sportage carries the longer wheelbase, 108.5 inches to 106.3. And ground clearance depends on drivetrain: the CR-V sits higher in front-wheel drive, 7.8 inches to 7.1, while the two are level with all-wheel drive, 8.3 to 8.2.

Both offer all-wheel drive on the gas and hybrid versions, which is the box most Butler County shoppers check first and the right instinct for a Slippery Rock winter.

It also moves the numbers. The CR-V's gas advantage grows from 2 mpg to 3, at 29 combined against 26. Its hybrid holds 37 to 35. And the price gap narrows to about $1,830. Over a Cranberry commute down I-79, that fuel difference is a real consideration.

What all-wheel drive does not touch is the rest. It does not shorten a 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty or shrink a 12.3-inch screen. Clearance is level once you add it, 8.3 inches to 8.2, so most winter arguments about these two turn out to be arguments about tires.

Both the 2026 Sportage and the 2026 CR-V hold a top overall 5-star U.S. government crash rating as of this writing, so on that measure they are tied. Crash results are published per model year and a rating can change from one year to the next, so check NHTSA.gov and IIHS.org for the current scores on the exact model year and trim you are cross-shopping.

Or you want the 12.3-inch screen without climbing the trim ladder.

Choose the Honda CR-V if: fuel economy is the number you are optimizing, especially with all-wheel drive, where 29 mpg combined beats 26 and the hybrids run 37 against 35. You cover enough miles a year that the gap compounds into more than the price difference you paid to get it. You do the big folded-seat cargo runs often enough that 76.5 cu ft against 74.1 counts. Or you want wireless charging and phone mirroring on the base trim.

The line between them is not brand loyalty. It is your annual mileage and how long you keep a vehicle.
