Kia 800V Ultra-Fast Charging in Western PA

Kia’s 800-volt architecture is a high-performance system for drivers in Western PA. While most modern electric vehicles operate on a 400-volt system, Kia’s engineering allows for faster charging, improved efficiency, and a seamless driving experience from Butler to Pittsburgh.

Kia 400V vs. 800V Technology

400V vs. 800V Technology

By doubling the voltage, Kia has created a powertrain that offers three distinct advantages:

  • Lower Amperage: The car accepts the same amount of power with half the current (amps).
  • Less Heat: Lower current reduces heat generation during the charging process, protecting the battery.
  • Thinner Wiring: Improved heat management allows for thinner, lighter internal cabling, which increases overall vehicle efficiency and range for long trips across Western PA.

800V Charging Speeds and Benchmarks

When connected to a 350kW DC Fast Charger, the 800V system delivers speeds that turn a charging stop into a brief pit stop. This speed is designed to match the time of a typical highway rest-area break.
Battery Size Model Example 10% to 80% Charge Time Miles Added per 10-13 Mins
77.4 kWh Kia EV6 Inventory 18 Minutes ~100 Miles
99.8 kWh Kia EV9 Inventory 24 Minutes ~100 Miles

Technical Exclusions

It is a common misconception that all new Kia EVs have 800V charging. For the 2025, 2026 cycle, the following models do not feature 800V architecture and use a 400V system instead:

  • Kia Niro EV (2025, 2026): Limited to a peak of ~100kW DC charging (10-80% in approx. 45 mins). View Niro EV
  • Kia EV3 (2026): Uses a 400V architecture to maintain an affordable price point. It takes approximately 31 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%.

Multi-Charging System Technology

A common question at Mike Kelly Kia is what happens when using an older 400V charger. Kia developed a world-first patented multi-charging system to solve this. If the car detects a 400V charger, it uses the vehicle’s motor and inverter as a boost converter to step that power up to 800V before it enters the battery. This ensures you get the maximum possible speed regardless of the station's voltage.

Battery Preconditioning for Western PA Winters

To ensure the 800V system hits peak speeds during cold Western PA winters, the battery must maintain an optimal temperature.

  • Automatic Activation: When a DC Fast Charger is set as a destination in the Kia Navigation, the car automatically warms or cools the battery while driving.
  • Maximum Efficiency: When you plug in, the battery is ready to accept the maximum charge rate immediately, avoiding the slow ramp up typical of colder batteries.

2026 NACS Transition and Updates

For the 2026 model year, the 800V system integrates the North American Charging Standard (NACS).

  • Direct Access: Native ports allow the EV9 and EV6 to plug directly into 16,500+ Tesla Superchargers, including locations in Cranberry Township and Wexford.
  • Inverter Role: Since Tesla Superchargers are currently 400V-based, the Kia multi-charging system converts that power to 800V to meet the car's requirements.
