Kia Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) Capability in Western PA

Kia Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) is a bi-directional charging feature that allows your Kia EV to act as a mobile power plant in Western PA. This technology delivers AC power to external devices, allowing you to use your vehicle's battery to run tools, camping gear, or home appliances during a power outage.

Kia Vehicle-to-Load Power Specifications

Power Specifications

The V2L system provides standard 120V AC household power. Depending on the model and region, it delivers between 1.9kW and 3.6kW of continuous power.

Kia estimates that a fully charged EV9 can provide enough energy for a family of four to run essential appliances for approximately five days.

Interior and Exterior Access Points

Kia provides two ways to access the energy stored in your vehicle's high-voltage battery:

  • Interior V2L Port: A standard 3-prong outlet located at the bottom center of the rear seats. This is used for powering devices like laptops or tablets while driving or parked.
  • Exterior V2L Connector: A specialized adapter that plugs into the external charging port. This transforms the inlet into a power source for heavy-duty outdoor equipment, camping gear, or charging another EV.

Smart Battery Management

To prevent depleting your driving range while using V2L in Western PA, Kia includes a customizable safety system:

  • Discharging Limit Setting: Through the infotainment screen (EV Menu -> V2L Settings), you can set a minimum battery threshold, such as 20%.
  • Automatic Cutoff: The V2L power supply shuts off automatically once the vehicle hits your set percentage, ensuring you have enough energy for your return journey.
  • Real-Time Monitoring: The system displays the remaining time based on the current power draw of your connected devices.

Kia Models with V2L Technology

V2L is primarily a feature of Kia's "E-GMP" dedicated electric vehicles and high-voltage hybrids.

V2L vs. AC Power Outlets

Many other Kia models include 110V/120V AC Power Inverters. These are limited to 150W or 400W and are meant for small electronics like cameras. Unlike V2L, these inverters cannot power heavy appliances like a refrigerator or a space heater.

Models with standard AC Inverters (NOT full V2L):
