2027 Kia Telluride vs 2026 Hyundai Palisade

What that table shows is sameness. Same footprint, same price bracket, same towing rating. What separates them is what each one does with that footprint.

The cargo gap is what changes a trip. With every seat occupied, the Telluride carries 3.2 cu ft more than the Palisade, about 17 percent more room exactly when a family has the least of it.

Think about the trip where that lands. Three rows full for a tournament weekend or a run to the airport. Everything the family is bringing has to fit behind the last row, because there is nowhere else for it to go. That is where 22.3 cubic feet against 19.1 stops being a spec.

It is the last bag sliding in behind the seats instead of riding on somebody's knees for two hours. Or a folded stroller standing where it belongs rather than wedged between a child's seat and a door.

Fold the third row and the Telluride still leads, 48.7 against 46.3. But the gap that decides a purchase is the one you meet with every seat full.

Two more points belong here. Telluride cargo volume is identical on every trim, so a buyer moving up the range for leather, a bigger stereo or a sunroof gives up none of it. And every feature in Drive Wise, Kia's driver-assistance suite, is standard equipment on the trims that carry it. There is no box to tick and no package to hunt for on a window sticker.

Published crash rating: NHTSA rates the 2026 Palisade 5 stars overall. Underneath that overall score sit 4 stars frontal, 5 side and 4 rollover, on the V6 Palisade in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive form. The 2027 Telluride has not been tested. If, as of the time of writing, a rating already on the books is part of how you decide, that point goes to Hyundai.

The corrosion term carries weight in Western Pennsylvania. Say you keep a vehicle until the loan is a distant memory. Seven years with no mileage cap against five years and 100,000 miles is a real difference. It lands in exactly the years when road salt has had time to do its work.

Standard trailering hardware: every Palisade arrives with trailer prewiring, heavy-duty engine and transmission coolers and trailer sway control, the system that steadies a trailer starting to weave, plus Tow Mode and 7-pin trailer wiring. For a household that tows regularly rather than twice a summer, that is the sturdier starting point.

Ten airbags: the Palisade carries ten as standard equipment, on every trim in the line.

The two lines start within a few hundred dollars of each other, and their top trims land just as close.

$245 is the whole gap at the bottom, with the Telluride the cheaper of the two. At the top it reverses: $230, with the Palisade the cheaper one. Neither gap is large enough to settle a purchase this size on its own.

What matters more is how alike the two entry trims are:

Two vehicles from different brands rarely line up that closely, and it changes what the entry-trim shopper is choosing between. You are not weighing one brand's cheap seat against another's nice one. Every row above matches, so the decision moves to cargo, engine, crash record, warranty and the points where the two brands tier their features differently. This is where the two part ways.

Neither badge wins this one outright. It comes down to two numbers that get treated as one. Horsepower and torque are not the same thing.

Torque is the shove. It moves a heavy vehicle away from a stop sign, and carries it up a grade without the transmission hunting for a lower gear. You feel it most when the vehicle is full. Horsepower keeps that effort going as speed climbs, so it shows up merging onto a highway and holding a pace once you are there.

The Kia has 51 lb-ft more torque. The Hyundai has 13 more horsepower. Empty, on flat ground, neither difference announces itself.

Load seven or eight people and their bags. Point it up one of the longer climbs out of a Butler County valley on the way home, and 311 lb-ft against 260 is the number doing the work. A buyer who mostly drives one or two people to Cranberry Township and back will notice neither figure. A buyer who fills the vehicle every weekend will feel the torque.

On both, the engine in the cheapest trim is the engine in the most expensive one.

Fuel economy does not decide this one:

• With all-wheel drive: the two are identical, 18 city, 24 highway and 20 combined.
• With front-wheel drive: 1 mpg apart in every column, which over a year of ordinary driving is a rounding error next to how you drive and what you carry.
• The one real step down: the Telluride X-Pro sits 3 combined mpg below the front-wheel-drive Telluride, in exchange for all-terrain tires and 9.1 inches of ground clearance. That is a deliberate trade, and it applies only to the two X-Pro trims, X-Pro SX and X-Pro SX Prestige.

The outside measurements are nearly the same. The inside is where they differ.

Outside, these are the same vehicle to within a third of an inch of width. Both fit the same garage and take up the same amount of a parking space at the Cranberry Township shopping centers.

Inside, the Telluride holds more cargo behind every row. If your last row is usually occupied, the figure to look at is the one measured behind that row: 22.3 cu ft in the Telluride, 19.1 in the Palisade. The folded-flat numbers are closer together, and they describe the day you move furniture rather than the drive you make every week.

Seating splits by trim rather than by badge. Check it before you settle on a trim:

On both, the eight-passenger bench sits at the lower end of the range, and climbing the trims eventually swaps it for captain's chairs. If you need eight seats, that narrows the shopping list on either side before anything else does.

Both are rated to tow 5,000 lb, so the headline number is a tie. What differs is the equipment around it.

Hardware: the Palisade includes its trailering package as standard, so the prewiring, the heavy-duty coolers and the sway control are already fitted. That is a real advantage for a regular towing household, and it is Hyundai's to claim.

The hitch: neither entry trim includes one, and both brands sell one to add. On both, the trims that arrive with a hitch already fitted are upper trims. If towing matters to you at all, decide that before you pick a trim rather than after.

Most of this section is a tie. The exceptions are worth knowing about.

The screens are a flat tie, and a rare one. Both put a 12.3-inch touchscreen with navigation in their cheapest trim, so the entry-level buyer is not looking at a smaller screen with navigation held back for a higher trim. Seven USB-C ports in each vehicle mean the third row is not the row arguing about a dead phone.

Hyundai's equivalent suite is called SmartSense. The entry trim of each carries the same core set:

• Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with pedestrian and cyclist detection
• Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Following Assist 2
• Blind-Spot Collision Warning
• Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist
• Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, Safe Exit Assist and Driver Attention Warning

Highway driving is where they tier differently, which matters if a long commute down the I-79 corridor is part of the week:

Each brand numbers its own versions, so read that as a range question rather than a feature question: what matters is how far down the range the later version reaches. On the Telluride it arrives in the middle of the range and covers every trim above. On the Palisade it sits at the very top of the line.

NHTSA gives the 2026 Palisade 5 stars overall. Underneath that overall score sit 4 stars in the frontal test, 5 in the side test and 4 for rollover. The rating covers the V6 Palisade in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive form. NHTSA has not tested the 2027 Telluride. As of the time of this writing, no rating on file is not the same thing as a low one.

Ratings change as new tests are published, so check NHTSA.gov for the latest on either vehicle.

The two coverages most buyers ask about are identical: 5 years and 60,000 miles bumper to bumper, 10 years and 100,000 miles on the powertrain. Corrosion and roadside assistance are where they diverge, and Hyundai holds both.

Kia's powertrain coverage carries one advantage no term length shows. When a Kia is resold through Kia Certified Pre-Owned, Kia's certified used-vehicle program, that 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain coverage carries to the next owner.

Most of this decision comes down to which of a handful of situations is yours:

Choose the 2027 Kia Telluride if:

• You fill every seat regularly and still need room behind the last one: 22.3 cu ft against 19.1.
• You want the pulling power. 311 lb-ft against 260 is what a loaded three-row feels like climbing out of a valley.
• You are otherwise torn and want the lower entry price to break the tie, $39,190 against $39,435 at launch.
• You want the same cargo figure whichever trim you buy.
• You want the driver aids to come with the trim rather than off a build sheet.

Choose the 2026 Hyundai Palisade if:

• You will not buy without a crash rating already in hand, and 5 stars overall settles it.
• You would rather have a naturally aspirated V6 and its 287 hp.
• You tow often and want the trailering hardware factory-fitted.
• You keep vehicles a long time and value 7 years of corrosion coverage with no mileage limit.

Usually two or three of those rows are yours at once, and they tend to point the same way. When they point in different directions, the cargo figure is the one people regret ignoring. Trims and accessories change plenty about either vehicle. The space behind the third row is not one of them.

Sit in the third row yourself instead of looking at it. Then load whatever you normally haul behind that row, because the 3.2 cu ft between these two sits right there.
