Your Kia's alternator generates the electricity that powers all of your car's components. It also provides the power to recharge your battery. The alternator, like any other component, can fail. If your alternator develops problems, your Kia dealer can provide an alternator repair or replacement. These are some of the signs that your alternator is struggling. more Burning Plastic The cloying stench of burning plastic isn't something you want to smell. If this smell comes from your engine, one possible cause is damaged wiring. The electricity produced by your alternator needs to be transmitted to all the components and devices in your car. Transmitting this power requires large numbers of wires and cables. A car's engine is a hostile place for electrical wiring, so all wires are protected by plastic and rubber coatings. Unfortunately, wiring can fray or break, and a damaged wire won't transmit any power. Your alternator will continue to send power down the damaged wire, which causes the wire to heat up. If the wire gets hot enough, it can cause the plastic insulation to burn. Damaged Rectifier As the crankshaft turns, it causes the alternator belt to move over a series of pulleys. The belt's movement causes these pulleys to spin, and this power the components attached to the pulleys. Your alternator is attached to one of these pulleys, and as it spins it produces electricity. A bundle of magnets in the center of the alternator generates magnetic energy that's converted into electrical energy. The power produced by the alternator is AC, and your car runs on DC. The rectifier in the alternator converts AC to DC, which allows this power to be used. If the rectifier fails, your alternator will produce power, but it can't be used. Your electrical systems will need to be powered by the battery until the battery power runs down. Once we replace the rectifier, your alternator will work again. Worn Alternator Belt The alternator belt is made from tough reinforced rubber. It runs continually across the pulleys to keep the various systems powered. We check the belt on regular occasions according to your car's service schedule to make sure that it's in good condition. If the belt hasn't been checked for a whole, it may suffer damage. A worn or damaged alternator belt could theoretically snap. If this happens, your car will immediately lose all electrical power and will stop. An overheating engine can suffer serious damage. One of the main causes of a rising engine temperature is a failure in the radiator. If the radiator fails, like your Kia dealer,r we can easily perform a radiator repair for you. These are several of the signs that you have a radiator problem that needs to be fixed. more Jammed Thermostat Coolant is released into your engine when the engine temperature reaches a preset level. This level can vary, but it's generally around 185 F. Coolant is a mix of antifreeze and water, and it absorbs heat. Your engine generates a vast amount of heat that radiates throughout it. This heat is safely absorbed and taken to the radiator, where it's removed by heat exchange. The release of coolant is governed by a small component called the thermostat. It monitors your engine temperature and releases coolant at the preset temperature. Once your engine temperature drops below the preset level, the coolant supply will be shut off until it's needed again. A thermostat can wear out and jam. If the thermostat jams closed, it won't release any coolant. Your engine will grow hotter and overheat. Clogged Radiator Coolant pumped through your engine absorbs other things besides heat. It will absorb rust, dirt, and other debris. These substances are also carried to the radiator. Coolant flows into the radiator from the top and is drawn out at the bottom of the radiator. The debris collected is left behind at the bottom of the radiator. As the accumulation in the radiator continues, it can start to block the radiator. Debris can also clog the cooling fins and the radiator hoses. The greater the blockage in your cooling system, the less efficiently your cooling system will work. The engine temperature will slowly increase, and as it does, it can damage your engine. We can flush your radiator and fill it with new coolant. Blown Thermal Switch The cooling system works very efficiently when your car is moving, as it depends on a steady flow of air across the radiator tubes to remove the heat. Hot air radiating from the coolant is blown away by inrushing cooler air through the radiator grille. If you are running, but your car isn't moving, the cooling system won't have enough airflow to remove the heat. When your engine idles, and the engine temperature goes up, a fan at the back of the radiator switches on. The fan blows across the tubes from behind and blows the hot air in the tubes out of the radiator. The fan is controlled by the thermal switch. This switch automatically activates the fan when your engine models. If this switch fails, the fan won't switch on. Our technicians can test the switch and replace it. Go Ape North Park Go Ape North Park is Pennsylvania's first treetop adventure park in McCandless Township, just 19 miles away from Butler. Go Ape has around 1,400 feet of zip lines where you and the kids can fly through the canopy of western Pennsylvania's forests. The treetop obstacle course has a variety of paths and activities in varying levels of difficulty. Pack a lunch for a break in the park's recreation area, and the park offers water throughout different points of the activity courses.
