The lakes and streams around Butler, PA, are teeming with a wide variety of fish species. Here you can fish all year round, so grab your fishing tackle, hop in your car, and cast your line at one of these great fishing spots below.

1. Lake Arthur

This lake in Moraine State Park is annually stocked by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. The lake offers anglers 3.225 acres of water to fish for crappie, bluegill, pike, catfish, muskellunge, and largemouth and hybrid striped bass. If you are after walleye, Crescent Bay to Lakeview offers excellent opportunities.

McDaniels Boat Launch has a fishing pier, and the peninsulas at Bear Run Boat Launch and Park Road Boat Launch are great spots to hook that big one you’ve been dreaming about. The lake is a favorite ice fishing destination, where anglers regularly reel in largemouth bass, bluegill, perch, pike, and crappie. Ice fishing is permitted in the Game Propagation Area from January 1 to March 15, but beware, the ice thickness is not monitored.

2. Lake Oneida

Just a few miles from the city on Route 38, the 142 acre Lake Oneida teems with several fish species and is the most popular spot for fishing in the region. There are no amenities, but that does not stop local fishermen.

The most common fish hooked here are bluegill, black and white crappie, yellow perch, largemouth bass, brown and yellow bullhead, channel catfish, white sucker, carp, and golden shiner. Angling is only permitted from the shore, and boating is not allowed.

3. Glade Run Lake

Another great spot to wet your hook is in this 52-acre lake managed under the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s Big Bass program. The Commission also stocks the lake throughout the year with trout and channel catfish fingerlings. The most popular fish hooked here are largemouth and spotted bass and rainbow trout. Anglers also reel in smallmouth bass, bluegill, pumpkinseed, channel catfish, white sucker, and golden and spot tail shiner.

4. Slippery Rock Creek

Anglers who are after trout and bass can fish in Slippery Rock Creek that runs through the McConnells Mill State Park. You can cast your line anywhere along the creek but not near or at any of the dam structures. The creek is stocked with trout several times in the trout season, and there is a fly fishing, catch, and release area at Armstrong Bridge.

5. Trout Streams Around the City

Many of the streams in the region are regularly stocked by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. The creeks are open for fishing throughout the year. The top spots include Connoquenessing, Bear, Thorn, and Silver Creeks, Bonnie Brook, and Little Buffalo Run. In any of these streams, you are guaranteed to reel in rainbow and brown trout, especially in spring and fall.
